This joint program between ATU Local 265, Santa Clara Mission College, and VTA offers a Certificate of Achievement in Transportation as a Coach Operator, Overhead Line Worker, Public Transit Leader, Service Mechanic, or Track Worker.  New hires apprentice as coach operators and can advance into dispatch and supervisory positions within the career pathway. Coach operators can also move laterally into entry-level maintenance positions, supporting the coach fleet or light rail stations, and advance to service mechanic (coach) or track worker (rail) positions through apprenticeship programs.

VTA’s Apprenticeship program was the first in the country to offer a bus operator apprenticeship officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Labor. It is also the first in the country to provide such college credit in its partnership with Mission College and ATU.

Internships

VTA is committed to enriching the public sector work experience for young professionals through its internship programs. In addition to partnering directly with local schools and agencies, VTA also sponsors internships with grant funding. Numerous former student interns have even become full time employees at VTA.

Next Generation Committee

VTA is a proud member of the Next Generation Committee. This partnership encourages engaging young professionals in the Bay Area public sector workplace and sharing best practices for enhancing workforce development. The committee organizes multiple programs throughout the year.​

Part-time College Internships

College interns gain meaningful hands-on work experience in the transportation industry focusing on VTA project-driven initiatives. Part-time placement possibilities include, but are not limited to, Graphic Design, Marketing, Transportation Planning, Employee Relations, and Human Resources.

High School Internships

Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School Corporate Work Study

VTA began its partnership with Cristo Rey in 2014. This unique opportunity introduces disadvantaged youth to the professional office environment. One day a week, year-round placements include, but are not limited to, Procurement, Contracts & Materials Management, Operations Planning, Traffic Engineering, Enterprise Risk Management, and Human Resources.

Metropolitan Transportation Commission

Since 2003, VTA has been working with Metropolitan Transportation Commission to find summer internship placements for Bay Area high school students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades interested in public transportation. Learn more about MTC's program.

Silicon Valley Career Path Internship Program

Since 2016, during the summer, VTA has been working with the Silicon Valley Organization and its community and school district partners to introduce high school students from select districts to a career in public transportation. Learn more about the Silicon Valley Organization's program.
